Twenty One Pilots Fans Divided Over Tyler Joseph’s Black Lives Matter Tweet

Tyler Joseph just can't seem to get it right with twenty one pilots fans.

In the early hours of Wednesday (March 24), the twenty one pilots singer took to Twitter to write "Black Lives Matter" and while 65,000 have "liked" the tweet, thousands more are calling him out for performative activism.

Last year, after staying quiet during the Black Lives Matter marches across the globe, Tyler Joseph tried — and failed — to make a joke about using his 'platform' by tweeting a photo wearing platform boots. As you can imagine, it didn't go over well… he even received his own #TylerJosephIsOverParty hashtag at the time. And fans have not forgotten.

Months after standing by his initial tweet and posting a link to resources, he's under fire again for "doing the bare minimum" by just tweeting three words with no links to resources or donation sites and fans, especially BIPOC fans, have explained why it's so upsetting (and rightfully so).

“Nobody is mad at Tyler Joseph for just saying ' black lives matter '. most people are mad because months before he had mocked the movement, so this seems performative. he isn't linking resources, or donating. people have reason to be mad,” one fan explained. While another fan wrote, “His black fans have every right to demand something better when he knowingly mocked a social movement, then spread info on one of his largest platforms only when he received backlash.”

Other fans jumped to his defense stating that it's never too late to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement. “Y’all getting mad at tyler joseph for saying blm now but where tf were you guys a few years ago? don’t act like you were speaking out for black people before everyone else posted a black square,” one fan wrote.

At the time of publishing, Tyler Joseph hasn't responded to fans' criticism.
